Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) is an ideal tehcnology for enjoying two-way broadband communications (for data, video and voice) in countries like Puerto Rico and many regions in the Americas , specially for communities and villages relatively isolated from main cities.
Two-way communications using VSATs ensure, in a cost-effective manner, high reliability and service uptime in essential communications services for HITNet customers. With this system, your organization sites are directly linked via satellite to the HITNet communication hub for your broadband Internet needs and other telecommunication services, not depending on any other carriers. And very important, VSAT technology offers another very valuable advantage in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico : robustness against service blackouts in case of hurricanes, unlike wireline communications, that often suffer severe service outages in such turbulent weather condition.
For providing VSAT-base telecommunication services, HITNet has selected the LinkStar system ( http://www.viasat.com ), for the high performance and reliability of its VSAT technology.
In Puerto Rico, with a 1.8 meter VSAT antenna, our customers located anywhere in the island may have access to our high speed Internet and data services, digital TV, voice over IP and other services. In sites where HITNet customers want to originate and transmit video, a 2.4 meter VSAT antenna is required.
Wireless Communications HITN is a pioneer in the United States in fostering the use of Instructional Television Fixed Services (ITFS) frequencies, in the 2.3 GHz - 2.7 GHz range, for educational television, and for high speed Internet and data access. It is also fostering the development of 3G mobile services in this portion of the radiofrequency spectrum.
As a result of all this effort, HITN is the largest holder of ITFS frequencies in the United States , with licenses in 37 domestic markets to programming and advanced wireless broadband services. Current leases of those frequencies include Sprint, Nextel, Clearwire and McCaw. HITN is also a founder of The Alliance, a national group intended to help ITFS spectrum licensees make effective use of their spectrum for educational uses.
In Puerto Rico , HITNet holds ITFS licenses in the 2.5 GHz band, awarded by the FCC, in the following markets: Aguada, Fajardo, Jayuya, Luquillo, Maricao. HITN has 48 MHz of spectrum in each of these markets.
