It’s Déjà Vu All Over de Nuevo

 By Gerson Borrero

To paraphrase legendary Yankee Hall of Famer catcher Yogi Berra, Its déjà vu all over de nuevo.

It is just amazing to read and listen to so many pollsters, pundits and political reporters trying to explain last Tuesdays election results in New York.

Particularly crafty on the re write of what voters in the Big Mango expressed are Michael Bloomberg’s very well paid consultants. According to these spinners they were not worried about the outcome. Millions of dolares well spent by the Mayor can do that.

Yet, no one can shed light on how the predicted slam dunk turned out to be a nail bitter if only for a little while.

The problem is that I don’t know if anything was learned.

For Latinos it was another opportunity missed.

While we did not have a Latino candidate motivating us, we had an incumbent that many opposed.

William Thompson for his part had the support of the majority of Latino politicians, activists and a Campaign Manager of Cuban ancestry, yet he never really tapped Latino passions.

But, enough of noticias viejas. What could, should or would have happened didn’t.

Now, the 2010 race for Governor has already begun. Does anyone dare say that the same could not happen next year?

David Paterson, burdened as he is with the fiscal crisis affecting the State has already launched two television ads.

The Governor is certainly fighting the disastrous poll numbers that are telling all of us he does not have chance at beating one possible challenger within his own party and at least two potential Republican foes.

The same polls that had Bloomberg crushing Thompson by as much as 18 points could be wrong again in 2010 about Paterson.

It could be déjà vu all over de nuevo.
